How Do I Become a Piano Teacher?

There are many ways to become a piano teacher and lots of different types of teaching a pianist might pursue. Basic requirements for this profession are strong skills as a pianist, and ability to capably instruct others. Those who teach piano may have minimal or advanced levels of formal training, and might require specific levels of education or some form of credentials. Plenty of teachers are less formally trained, but by their own skills are qualified for general piano instruction or more specific teaching of playing certain types of music.

Most piano instruction is private lesson style, and a person might either choose to become a piano teacher full-time, or augment income by instructing students on a part-time basis. Occasionally, people teach piano in groups or they work in settings like performing arts schools or colleges where they coach or teach performers in small groups or individually. There are also some beginning piano programs that are taught to younger children, as part of enrichment programs, in public or private schools or there are some music-oriented schools or conservatories where children or teens may learn or hone piano skills in group settings.

ASID – STEP

STEP – NCIDQ Exam Preparation

ASID has long recognized the key role that the NCIDQ examination plays in design practitioners’ career plans. Passage of this rigorous test signifies the hallmark of professionalism in the interior design community, and alerts the public to the expertise and experience of the designer who has met this challenge. To that end, ASID created the STEP program to provide a broad perspective of the issues and information pertinent to the NCIDQ exam.

The STEP workshop is periodically conducted nationwide and is comprised of 20 hours of instruction over a 2 1/2-day period. Participants have the opportunity to experience practice exams patterned after the newest NCIDQ and, with the guidance of experienced instructors, determine which areas require further preparation. Workshop participants are provided with a comprehensive workbook that includes practicum exercises and multiple-choice sections similar to those in the NCIDQ exam. These practice tests are administered and thoroughly reviewed during the workshop. The workbook also includes helpful practice exams that participants may take home with them.

Learn the Piano

When you learn the piano you will have access to an entire paint palette. The sound of the piano keys range from dark purples to bright oranges and yellows. The sound you produce is only limited by your imagination.

Sit at the centre of your piano and play a note in the middle. The sound is like the middle of the colour spectrum – like a mid blue. Press 3 adjacent notes down together. This gives a murky, muddy sound.
